The Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

December 1, 2017Richard GrubbOral Health

More than 30 thousand Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and over 9000 Americans die from oral cancer annually. Early diagnosis is one of the most important factors when it comes to surviving cancer. That’s why screening for oral cancer is a regular part of every dental checkup at Family Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry in Havre de Grace. It only takes a few minutes, but it could be the most important part of your visit.

Your Oral Cancer Screening

During you cancer screening, Dr. Grubb will examine your head, neck, and oral cavity. When he looks inside your mouth, he’ll check the floor of your mouth, your cheeks, lips, tongue, larynx, and soft palate, checking for early signs of cancer. He will also check your jaw and under your chin for unusual masses of tissue. If Dr. Grubb discovers anything out of the ordinary, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist.

Why Everyone Needs Regular Cancer Screening

There are risks factors that dramatically increase a patient’s chances of contracting oral cancer, such as tobacco or alcohol use. These two habits are related to up to 75 percent of oral cancers, but everyone needs to get regular cancer screening. It’s important to remember that a significant percentage of the people who get oral cancer neither drink nor smoke. Nobody is immune from getting oral cancer.

There are some issues that should be addressed by your dentist right away. For example, any sore or discolored area inside your mouth that persists for over 14 days should be seen by your dentist. Any unusual lump in the head or oral cavity should also be referred to your dentist.

Persistent pain or discomfort while you’re speaking, chewing, or swallowing is another issue that needs to be addressed by your dentist. Other issues that require medical attention include any unusual growths in the head and numbness in the face, neck, or mouth. A persistent earache should also be referred to your dentist. If you have questions about any symptoms you are experiencing, please contact our office right away.
